Bambino or Nespresso? Start with your morning.
Capsule convenience and hands-on espresso solve different problems. Choose the routine you want to repeat.
A first-machine buyer or Nespresso owner considering a move to manual espresso.
The short answer
Choose the Essenza Mini if you want Original-capsule coffee without a grinder. Choose the Bambino if you want hands-on espresso and are willing to prepare coffee, texture milk manually and clean up. Keeping a capsule machine is a reasonable outcome.
Keep what works. If your current capsule routine is satisfying, switching to espresso is optional.

Choose when
You value the capsule routine and its convenience.
The preparation and learning are part of what you want.
The shape of the routine.
Compare the parts you will handle every day. Separately framed illustrations do not compare product sizes; your own measurements establish fit.
Buy the routine you will actually repeat.
The Essenza Mini makes the capsule system the starting point: keep compatible Original capsules ready, refill the machine, brew and empty the used-capsule container. It does not need a coffee grinder. The selected EN85B is a machine-only choice, so a milk routine needs separate equipment.
The Bambino gives you a loose-coffee espresso route. It adds basket choice, dose preparation, puck disposal, portafilter cleaning and manual milk texturing when you make milk drinks. The meaningful difference is what you do each morning, not a universal taste winner.
The machine is only one part of the purchase.
For capsules, include ongoing capsule use and the milk equipment you need. For espresso, decide whether you will start with pre-ground coffee in a dual-wall basket or use a suitable grinder with single-wall baskets. Those are different system requirements.
Do not add a J-Ultra, premium kettle and scale to every beginner’s shopping list. Equipment should earn its place. A grinder is not a blanket prerequisite for every Bambino basket route; read the basket guide before buying another tool.
- Already own an Original machine and a milk frother? Keep the working setup if the drinks and routine still suit you.
- Starting a Bambino with suitable pre-ground coffee? Confirm the supplied dual-wall basket and check the box contents before buying a grinder, tamper or milk jug again.
- Choosing single-wall espresso? Include a suitable espresso grinder and dose-handling space in the budget. Automatic milk on a different machine does not remove those tasks.
Plan where the work happens.
Check refill and waste access on the capsule machine. For the Bambino, also plan a place for puck preparation, a milk jug and cleanup. A small body does not mean a small operating routine.
If the cabinet or counter is a hard constraint, use the measurement worksheet. We do not resolve the Bambino’s conflicting dimension order by guessing, and we have not measured either machine’s operating clearances.
Switch only if the extra work is part of the appeal.
A capsule owner who wants more control may welcome espresso preparation. A buyer who mainly wants quick, consistent access to a drink may prefer to keep the existing routine. Neither answer needs to be dressed up as an upgrade.
If milk automation is the missing feature, compare the Bambino with the Bambino Plus rather than assuming the entry machine does everything you want. If grinding is the unresolved cost or effort, settle that question before ordering.
A few useful answers.
Is the Bambino always better than Nespresso?
No. Our recommendation changes with your desired routine, equipment and willingness to prepare and clean. We have not performed a comparative taste test.
Do I need a grinder on day one?
Not for Original capsules. For the Bambino, the answer depends on the basket and coffee route: dual-wall baskets support pre-ground coffee; single-wall espresso needs suitably ground coffee.

Black, machine-only EN85B. US W4.3 × D12.8 × H8.1 in corroborates the EN85 dimensional diagram W110 × D325 × H205 mm. The planner uses that axis mapping; the inconsistent 84 mm manual value is excluded. Opening/removal clearances remain unmeasured.
