Does a Bambino need a grinder? Check the basket.
Dual-wall with pre-ground coffee and single-wall with freshly ground beans are different buying paths.
A Bambino buyer deciding what equipment is actually required before the first drink.
The answer changes with the basket
You can start a Bambino with suitable pre-ground coffee in a dual-wall basket, following its US manual. A single-wall espresso route needs suitably freshly ground coffee and useful grind control. J-Ultra is one conditional manual option, not a mandatory accessory.
Keep what works. Start with the basket and coffee route you intend to use. Do not buy a grinder just to complete someone else’s setup.
Your basket changes the shopping list.
Check your exact US model and the basket you intend to use. This selection does not assess extraction quality.
A new grinder is not an automatic first purchase.
Follow the US manual’s dual-wall guidance for suitable pre-ground coffee. Learn that routine before adding equipment.

The US BES450 manual distinguishes dual-wall filters for pre-ground coffee and single-wall filters for freshly ground coffee. That distinction is the basis of this guide. Do not assume that advice for one basket applies to the other.
Check the actual basket supplied with your exact US model and bundle. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for dose, coffee and safe operation rather than assuming an online kit has everything included.
The pre-ground starting route.
If you intend to use the documented dual-wall/pre-ground route, a new grinder is not automatically required to begin. Choose suitable coffee, follow the manual and learn the preparation and cleanup routine.
This does not mean any grind or coffee will work identically. It means the equipment decision should match the actual basket path, and your next purchase can wait until it solves a problem you can identify.

The single-wall espresso route.
Freshly ground coffee with useful control over espresso preparation changes the grinder requirement. Choose a suitable espresso grinder rather than a generic compact grinder whose espresso suitability has not been established.
J-Ultra is an espresso-focused manual route if you want to hand-grind and that effort suits your hands, budget and number of drinks. If you need a motor, investigate suitable electric-espresso options beyond our current ten-product shortlist.
A filter grinder is not a shortcut around the question.
The OXO Compact appears in our portfolio for filter-coffee buyers. We do not present it as a proven universal single-wall Bambino match. A smaller body or lower reference cost cannot replace the right method-specific evidence.
Keep your machine decision and grinding decision connected. The Bambino/Plus and pods/espresso guides may also change what equipment you genuinely need.
A few useful answers.
Can I begin without buying J-Ultra?
Yes. It is a conditional manual option, not a universal prerequisite. The documented dual-wall/pre-ground route changes what you need to start.
Can I use my filter grinder instead?
Do not assume it is suitable for single-wall espresso. Check your basket and the grinder’s actual espresso evidence; the OXO Compact is not our universal espresso recommendation.
Does buying the Plus remove the grinder question?
No. Automatic milk texturing does not grind coffee. Your basket and coffee preparation path still determine the grinding need.
The next step is yours.
Keep your current setup, follow a related guide or inspect the exact current model and offer. A good decision can end without a purchase.
